I often get messages sent to addresses in the form 07971123456@vgsmail.com. This is incorrect, although it is my fault for not having any decent help page.
There are two address formats which can be used to send sms.
1) Messages can be sent to 07971123456@sms.vgsmail.com. In this format, you should always use a phone number either in international or national format. The only exception is if you are sending a message to someone else having an account on vgsmail, in which case you can send it to vgsmailuserid@sms.vgsmail.com.
2) Messages can be sent to dad@alias.vgsmail.com. In this format, you can only use aliases you have created in the web-interface.
Naturally, the message must be billed to some account on the vgsmail system, and this is determined using the following three rules in order:
1) If the message has a 'userid password' pair on the subject line, then the relevant account is billed, and the 'originator' of the SMS message is set to the mobile number registered to that account.
2) If the 'from' field of the email matches an email address in the vgsmail system, and the 'Allow from-line authentication' option is selected for that account (see the Account Options page in the web-interface), then this is equivalent to authentication 1) without the need to transmit your userid and password each time.
3) If the message has failed tests 1) or 2), but is sent to an account in the form vgsmailuserid@sms.vgsmail.com, and that user has 'Accept incoming email' selected on their account, the message will be billed to the recipient. In this case, as the originator of the email is now known to vgsmail, the message will appear to come from 'Internet', and the from address will be pre-pended to the message.

Hi,
Is this written up somewhere else?
(what I want to be able to do is send a message from Outlook to VGSMail and have an SMS sent to a GSM# specified in the mail, with message text also specified in the mail)
i.e. - where/how do I put the recipient # and message in the mail body?
TIA, Simon |
