As many of you will be aware, the server went 'down' at some point in the early morning on Wednesday, and has been down until this morning. The delay in getting the system back 'up' was due to the fact that I was off-site and had no way of accessing the server. In short, on my return I discovered that the hardware router between the server and the outside world had 'frozen'. A power-cycle is all that was necessary, and full service was immediately restored. I am now going to think about how to avoid this situation in the future, or at least find some way of minimising down-time of this nature. One solution would be to move to managed hosting or at least managed virtual hosting, although this would incur relatively significant costs and hence boast the cost of messages (something I am hoping not to do). Another solution would be to have a secondary server at a different location. I will report here as soon as I come to some conclusion, and as usual if you have any concerns, suggestions, comments, please drop me an email.
